The Long Game is a community-focused health app that turns longevity metrics into friendly competition. I led end-to-end design to make complex health data engaging, social, and easy to track.

Users lack a centralized platform that integrates comprehensive health data with meaningful, motivating experiences, making it difficult to consistently engage with and act on their longevity goals. The challenge was to design a solution that not only aggregates personal health records but also leverages competition to drive sustained behavior change and engagement.

We prioritized four core areas; feed, data entry, leagues, and user profile, to deliver a focused MVP that clearly communicated the app’s value and enabled meaningful engagement. After launch, we identified friction in the sign-up/login flow and simplified it, reducing required inputs and improving onboarding, which led to 100+ users successfully signing up and actively using all key features.

We were working under a tight timeline to reach MVP, which required us to prioritize speed over in-depth user research. Despite this constraint, we successfully delivered a functional product that users are engaging with today.

We analyzed leading fitness and longevity apps alongside highly engaging platforms to identify opportunities for differentiation and growth. This helped us define where we could succeed in the space while also uncovering gaps in existing products, allowing us to intentionally strengthen those areas in our own app.

We defined user flows for each section of the app. The ones that required the most thought were data entry and creating leagues which I’ve put below.

High-fidelity designs were created and then iterated on multiple time before being handed off to the development team. There were over 300 screens put together throughout the process and each iteration was reviewed and critiqued by the founder, product manager, and the developers.

Manual Data Entry Iterations
Manual Data Entry Iterations
The manual data entry flow was iterated on to reduce the amount of steps required to log data while also give the user a sense of how many steps are required. Additionally, the data entry flow was updated to make it simple and straightforward for the user so they could learn about the metrics they were measuring and easily enter them quickly.

League Iterations
League Iterations
Leagues was iterated on throughout the process as there were several goals of this feature: allow users to quickly create leagues, view their standing in their league, and find more leagues to join. Additionally, a countdown clock was added to help the user understand that their rankings in leagues are not real-time, as it was not possible for a scalable development.

The evolution of the Profile section prioritized the user being able to view all their stats based on the categories they were already used to. Additionally, Profiles was put together so that the user could have a version of a personal EHR (electronic health record) in a centralized place.

Development Handoff
Each feature that was handed off to development included a handoff video, the Figma file, notes within the file, and a Notion task that included all relevant links, objectives and success metrics. Additionally, if any features consisted of complex logic I would accompany the hand off with user flows so that the developers could understand the logic and how a user would move through the feature.

Learnings

It is extremely important to understand development constraints when you are designing.
Keep it simple and find out a way to make complex concepts easy for users to understand and navigate.
Consistency is key. Consistent designs put less mental burden on the user so they can more easily navigate the app.
Communicate. Keeping communication open and professional with stakeholders help you understand the process as a whole and makes you a better designer.

Next Steps
Next Steps
The next steps for The Long Game app involve several features that focus on engagement as well as monetization. Features I see happening going forward are:
Challenges for users to do when they first down the app and are fun and engaging.
Branding accounts for companies to promote their health focused products to users.
The Long Game creates their own blood panels that they market on the app to make it easier for users to do the bloodwork that the Long Game league requires to compete.
